Etra Lake Park, Hightstown, NJ
This little park is situated due-east from downtown Hightstown. You need to go past the Peddie School’s swimming pool and PE Center and cross over the NJ Turnpike to get to Etra Lake Park from Princeton. It is a very popular meeting place for older cyclists who are likely retired and want to go for bike rides together in the mornings on the weekdays. These rides are usually categorized as C+. And due to the surrounding area the rides tend to be board flat. On the one ride I went on that left from this location it went south around Allentown, and only lasted 35 miles or so. My understanding is that most rides from here go south.
Although there is another ride location to the north (Village Park in Cranbury), and another to the south (Hamilton Area YMCA near Crosswicks), I think this is probably the best “eastern” location for flat bike rides. It is far enough east that it is on the eastern side of the NJ Turnpike. So the selection of rides to the east is just about unlimited. Cranbury has some limitations because of the NJ Turnpike. And I like the routes that can be devised from Etra Lake better than the ones that can be devised from the Hamilton Area YMCA. Of course, it’s a bit a haul for me to get down to the Hamilton Area Y, too.
